Coherence Technical Services Ltd is a one-person UK engineering operation. I build bespoke apps and consult on technical projects for small businesses, start-ups, and teams that need an experienced pair of hands. Direct contact, no layers in between. You talk to the person doing the work.
Background
Dan Williams, founder.
Before founding Coherence I spent decades engineering systems across telecoms, government, and investment banking, environments where reliability, clarity, and long-term thinking are crucial.
Today that experience goes into a smaller class of project: a bespoke app for a growing business, a few weeks of senior consultancy on a tricky integration, an in-house product shipped under the Coherence brand.
Why solo
Small by design, not by accident.
The work that interests me — small ambitious projects, a single product done well, focused consultancy spikes — is best done by someone with end-to-end ownership. No empire-building, no upsells, no army of juniors learning on your project.
When a job genuinely needs more hands, I bring in trusted contractors on a B2B basis. If Coherence grows in the future, it’ll be because a specific opportunity demanded it — not because I needed it to.

Modern stack, classic discipline.
How I work
Small scope, clear deliverables, frequent demos. No surprises in the invoice, nothing in the codebase another engineer can’t pick up later.
Stack I know cold
Java and Spring Boot on the back end; React and React Native on the front; relational databases; Linux hosting. Other tech welcome when it earns its place. Picked because it’s durable.
What I won’t do
Endless retainers, vendor lock-in, “rewrite everything” pitches. If a problem doesn’t need software, I’ll say so.
